Some printers evidently do use some color when printing black (greyscale) and white. To prevent this:
Right-click on your printer and select "Printing Preferences..."
Click the "Advanced" Tab at the top of the window
Click to place a check in the box beside "Print in Greyscale"
Also tick the radio button for "Black Only"
In the future, your printer should not use any color from your color cartridges, unless you alter your settings. Also, if you do use color, try to balance your color usage - if you print a lot of red backgrounds, you will exhaust that color and have to replace the entire color cartridge. You can also (in printing preferences) select to NOT print background colors if you do choose to use color. -Ann Fennell

I have a Canon S520 printer. It ran out of black ink a short while ago, so I installed a new cartridge. It has been warning me that the three colors are running low, but I have been ignoring it, because I never print in color and don't want to have to buy colored ink cartridges. I used to do this all the time - let the colors run out and print with only black. It worked just fine on every printer I've ever used, until now. Now I've run out of Magenta and it won't print at all. Does anyone know of anything I can do to keep this printer going on just black ink?
