Mick, the BIOS is a collection of subroutines in ROM that control the Basic
Input Output Systems of your machine. The CMOS is a small (but growing)
collection of data in battery backed up Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor
memory. The BIOS, as well as other software use this setup data to discover
things about your machine in order to perform their functions as you want
(sometimes) them to. Hope I haven't muddied the waters. - Charles Morris
