PKZIP long preceded LHARC. The originator of PKZIP died a
drunken pauper in just the last few months.

There is a freeware version of PKZIP and PKUNZIP. It is a
crippled version of the complete program with features such as
compressing programs across multiple floppies, etc., disabled.
The freeware version is, however, adequate for most file
compression jobs.
Registering the program gets you a registration number which is
incorporated into the freeware version. The registration number
activates all the features. Once registered all upgrades to the
program are free.
