I see the following in a (original) normal Win95 Explorer window:

C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files\Internet Explorer Classes for Java.

The status column for this program file says it is damaged.
<snip>

Anybody been there, done this?<<

=========
Unfortunately, yes, and only a week ago. You will need to "reinstall"
files from msjava.cab. There is a Knowledge Base article that takes you
through the troubleshooting and fix step-by-step -- do a full-text search
for "Classes for Java" or "msjava.cab" in the product group Internet
Explorer 4.0, and you should find it. Watch out when following their
directions -- there is a silly typo (as I recall, the article refers to the
wrong path at one point -- it's a fairly obvious error, if I could catch
it.)

I still don't know what caused it, though...
Good luck!
