  MS Office applications often use ~XXX.tmp files for auto-save while an
office document is being worked on.  Exactly what "XXX" is has varied with
the Office version, I think.  I'd expect ~WRxxxx.tmp to be from MS Word,
perhaps an old version such as 97.
  In the normal course of affairs, these files (a) are created in the folder
where the document resides (which I guess could be the desktop for some
users), and (b) are deleted during normal close of the document or shutdown
of the application.

  So, if you're seeing a bunch of them left behind, this strongly suggests
that an application is not getting shut down properly/normally, but instead
is either crashing or having the power knocked out beneath it....
