Thanks guys!  I appreciate the help.

It seems to be fixed.  Apparently it was a conflict issue.  I restored 
my computer back to the set date September 14th; that got rid of the 
latest Firefox update and whatever was jamming the scan. 

I had to download the new AVG license at the library; it was 124 
megabytes and took over half an hour to download even there!  Imagine 
how long that would take at 52 Kbps?!  LOL!  Peter, I'm going to save 
that CD but I am also going to look into Avira and/or Vipre as you 
suggest.   Then I will request my money back from AVG; you're right, it 
has become a memory hog.

Wasn't there a very effective "free" antivirus put out by Microsoft 
though?  The name of it slips my mind...
