I'm actually thinking about searching network shares without having to map
them to drive letters. You can do this in windows explorer by browsing the
network neighbourhood (though such shares aren't visible in DOS unless you
assign a drive letter). The shares I'm interested have open access, no
passwords or anything. One of the problems though is that a computer may
appear in the network neighbourhood but not be accessible (eg switched off).
It seems you can't cancel explorer's timeout while it waits for a response -
this makes manually searching each share time-consuming.
