First let me share the good news with you that Lavasoft's Ad-Aware is quite healthy and very much with us.  That said, the problem you describe indicates to me that you are running the now partially retired release, Ad-Aware SE Personal, Build 1.06r1 which since 01 Jan 2008 is no longer supported for direct updating thru the program's GUI.  I say 'partially' retired because weekly definition updates can still be had by mousing on over to Ad-aware's download page on the web.

After downloading the current zipped definitions file, you'll to to extract the file and place it in the program folder located at  C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal and you'll be up-to-date and good to go.

The reason for alll this is that the Ad-Aware version you're currently using has been superceded by a new 2007-series release, now Ad-Aware 2007 7.0.2.6, and cutting off one-step support for the older version is Lavasoft's gentle way of telling you they'd like you to migrate to their  newest product.

If you prefer not to transition to Ad-Aware 2007 at this time, you can simply continue to manually update the program every Monday [the day they post the new def files] until Lavasoft completely discontinues support for SE Personal. Since I'm not affiliated with the folks in Sweden I can't tell you exactly when support will be cancelled, but my best guess would be that support will end no later 31 Dec 2008.
