David,
I'm really not that naive. I installed ZA immediately after deactivating XP FW. I also keep my security updated, always! Also have a router with a built in FW that keeps our computers secure. The only reason I use a personal FW is to keep stuff from LEAVING my computer. The router takes care of anything getting in. I use NAV and keep it set to automatically update. No, what I think happened is some sys settings got changed, somehow, when I fooled around with that inane Win XP FW! I DID check out some of the programs running in background. Found that I have more running than I had before this chaos took place. Now, I just need to find out what changed on my sys. Thanks, anyway, for the advice.

How up-to-date are your XP security patches? If I deactivated my firewall
and my CPU utilization went up by 30%, I'd be checking for a worm like
Welchia/Nachi or the new Bolgi, which get in via the same vulnerability
which MS released a patch for in July/August.
If you can call up the "Task Manager" ...................
