Kurt--

Could be any number of possibilities. I doubt that you'll get much
response until you detail what you've already tried, as writers aren't
likely to have the time or inclination to go over ground you've already
covered.

Also, by inference from your letter, the problem has existed since you were
running Win 95B, though you don't make this very clear. If that is so, it
would rule out, or perhaps suggest, certain possibilities.

And, I imagine, you'd need to be much more specific in how you
upgraded---ie whether or not it's possible that you've carried a problem
over from one OS to the next, or whether you reformatted in between.

Please be as specific as possible. Which browser? Does it happen as often
with alternative browsers? Also give details about how you restart after
any crash---do you always restart in Safe Mode, for example (it's always
wise, though I don't know about ME for this procedure, to give the system
the chance to properly close the program that caused the crash).

Unfortunately, Windows crashes tend to compound on themselves if not dealt
with immediately. But that's assuming it's a software, and not a hardware,
problem. At the moment, I don't think you've given the experts quite enough
info to be able to help you specifically.

Of course, if the problem has been there for a long time and has survived
reformats and different OS's, that certainly points to a hardware problem,
possibly of the sort you have assumed.

Details of your experience level would also help a lot.

Don,

Sorry, I was trying to keep it short and sweet, but I guess I made it bit
too short.

I have had the problem for about 9 months now. It started while I was using
95b. I have upgraded many other systems (clients) and it usually takes care
of the problems they might have been having. So I figured it couldn't hurt
to try it on my problem. Since then I have upgraded to "ME" because the
price was right and who knows it might fix the problem.

I have tried so many things I can't remember them all, but some for the
things that I did was:

Changed to a fixed Virtual Memory
Tried 3 different versions of IE (never tried Netscape)
Upgraded video driver
Changed video to a plain ATI driver (no bells and whistles)
Replaced the modem 3 times (for a different problem - connection speed)

After the system goes down and I hit "Control,Alt,Del" several times the
system comes up on its own in normal mode. Very seldom does it run a
scandisk and/or come up in safe mode. When I run Scandisk it finds nothing,
and if I force it to start in safe mode then restart, the problem is still
present.

I have not formatted the drive in quite some time, and can not say if it was
done since the problem arose. My mouse is a Logitech Marble /PS2 and has
been installed for about 2 years now with out any fault that I can see.

I just changed the Advanced Graphics setting to 3/4 from full yesterday and
it has not crashed, but it has done this once or twice (worked) for about a
day or two before locking up again.

experience level = 1 to 10 / 8 (6 years of building systems)
Not a wiz, but no dummy

Thanks for your advise

Kurt
