The standard answer to this is to re-register, restart or reinstall the
installer service, and the instructions are here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346
You may also want to try a System Restore, which has worked for me in
the past.

I recently tried to update my AVG.anti-virus and got the error message
"Windows installer service could not be accessed"
What does this mean and what do I do about it? Never had a problem
before.
Running Windows 7 on a Asus laptop.
