Just a couple of (possibly obvious) things to check first. 

First: Are your view settings set to display all messages, or just new messages. (It's been some time since I've used OE, so I'm not sure if you need to look under tools -> options or under view -> layout.)

Second: Click on the column header where the date and time of the message is shown. You want to sort the column from most recent to least recent. Clicking the column headers is a toggle of sorts, whether alphabetic on the From column or chronological on the Date column.

If this doesn't help, I hope some of the other knowledgeable folks on this list can help.
