Jim,

The rules for loading a dll can follow the same rules as for an executable.
That is, it will search your PATH environment variable looking for the first
instance of a dll to load. You may have multiple copies of MSVCRT.DLL on
different paths on your disk. MSVCRT.DLL is a common Visual C/C++ runtime
that applications link with when they are built by the developer. This dll
is a freely re-distibutable library from Microsoft. Since it is required by
these third party applicattions, part of the application install is to
verify that this dll is copied to your system. Sometime applications may
copy to different places so you can end up with multiple copies in different
places. One may be old or corrupt, but is the first one found when running
your applications (because of the paths listed in your PATH environment), so
it gets loaded but crashes.

What you can do first is see how many copies you have and where they are,
open up "My Computer", right click on your C: drive and select "Search...".
In the search window, have it search for files and folder named
"MSVCRT.DLL". You can then examine your PATH environment variable. Click
"Start -> Run", and in the "Run" dialog box, enter "cmd" (no quotes) and hit
the Enter key. In the command window, type "path" (again, no quotes). This
will print the current path environment. This is a list of paths separated
by semi-colons (;). These are searched from the first to the last. Compare
this with the list of MSVCRT.DLL's you found with the search to see which
one will be encountered first. I would suspect that this one is causing your
problems. Try renaming this to something that will not be searched, like
"MSVCRT.SAVE" and try running your applications.
