I too was a bit confused by all this portal talk. It seems to be the idea of
offering a customized start page whenever you start your browser. On this
page, you can have the local weather, Dow Jones average reports, and various
links to your favorite sites. The advantage to the host of this page is that
you will likely look at some of their advertising - leading to advertising
revenue.
