I found a nice little description of this problem at
http://tigger.rdg.ac.uk/ntfaq/ntfaq_02JUN98.html#probsolv34

It suggests that FDISK /MBR has a reasonably good chance of fixing
the problem. [This, in turn, suggests to me that a scan for viruses
*first* may be in order....]

The problem seems to have something to do with NT being in an
extended partition.
I suspect that you actually have two partitions on the drive; a
primary partition (C:) and an extended partition containing volumes
D:, E:, and F:. Since D: and E: are FAT32, this extended partition
may be marked FAT32X rather than FAT16X, and that may be interfering
with the NT loader's ability to find F:.

David, I checked the site you gave and it certainly has a wealth of NT
information.
I think it would take days just to check it out.
However, have returned all my partitions to FAT and did a clean install of
NT4.0 again.
Still getting the same problem, so it could be in the MBR., but I don't
fancy running FDISK/MBR
And losing many GB,s of data.
A thought though, would adding a second HD and installing NT on it overcome
the problem?.
What do you think?.
Also, what do you think of Robert Phillips suggestion which was about
changing to a partition
close to the c:\drive?. Might be worth a try.

Thank you both for your help,

Regards,
Alan
