In Internet Explorer, select Tools | Internet Options | Connections. Under
the section for Dial-up Settings, select Advanced then make sure there is a
check in the box for "Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed"
Close all boxes. The next time you open and close IE you should get the box
asking you if you want to disconnect.

<<Many thanks for the help and solutions to my two small problems. Now
here's one more that I hope someone can help me with: When I close I.E. a
box giving me the option to close or stay on-line used to pop up. It no
longer does and I have to remember to go to the icon on the task bar to go
offline, something I tend to forget to do... Help? Win95, IE 5.5
