"Relaying" is when an email server (SMTP server) is used to pass
email, where neither the "From:" address (or source IP address) nor
the "To:" address is recognized by the server as being part of its
"domain".

If you've checked the message headers, you've probably noticed that
a lot of the spam you get comes by way of SMTP servers in ".tw"
(Taiwan) or .kr (Korea) domains. Many of these machines are "open
relays", willing to pass email from anywhere TO anywhere. (The worst
ones will also conceal where they received each message from....)

The SMTP server that your email client is pointing to is NOT an
"open relay". Its administrator doesn't want it used to relay spam,
so they have configured it to pass only two kinds of mail:

1. Messages from "internal users" to the rest of the world. (In
these cases, either the From: address domain is recognized, or the IP
address is inside the network the server is supposed to serve.)

2. Messages from the outside world to internal users. (In these
cases, the To: address domain has been found on the server's list of
"domains for which we receive mail".)

Apparently, the message you are trying to send meets neither
criterion.

When you're using your cablemodem, your IP address is part of the
cable provider's network, not Earthlink's. Unless you are sending to
someone with an @earthlink.net address, Earthlink does not want
random cablemodem users pumping mail through their SMTP server.
(Your cablemodem provider probably has an SMTP server that they will
gladly let you use to send mail when you are connected using their
network.)
