Michael Beechey asks: how can I disassemble a digest?

I'd like to ask a similar but different question. Given a digest table
of contents with items like

    1. DOS Help (was Set Environment) (4)
    2. Start Menu behaviors with mouse (3)
    3. MS Access (2)

I'd like to position the cursor on the "Start Menu" line, say, and then
with each subsequent press of F2 (for instance), be taken to each of the
three "Start Menu" postings. A fourth press of F2 would take me back to
the table of contents with the cursor on the "MS Access" line ready to
pursue that thread.

I know how to do this with a mainframe (VM) mail reader (and would be
happy to share it with anyone that wants it) but I haven't run across a
similar capability with any of the POP clients.
