Thanks to all who have replied.  I took the advise and used msconfig and it worked
very well to remove unnecessary start up of programs.  I also used the list of
start up programs that tells if they are necessary or not to determine which
programs I would remove from that function.  Everything worked out well and we have
no unnecessary functions going on in that computer.  It will server my friend well
until they can afford a more "modern" machine.
