Update

The Excel 2000 lock-up problem appears to stem from a conflict with a
program called Pwatch.
After I stopped the pwatch process using the close program (Ctrl-Alt-Delete)
dialog, Excel operated normally.
Pwatch.exe is part of the software installed for my HP CD-Writer Plus
(parallel) drive.
