  There's probably nothing to stop a virus from rewriting part of an
image file.  But in order for this to work as a virus, he needs to
get your viewer (browser or paint program or other) to jump into the
image data and start executing it as code.  It's barely possible that
there might be a viewer out there with a bug that can cause this
behaviour, but (a) it's pretty unlikely, and (b) it would only work
with that particular viewer program.
