How does a web browser 'remember', between sessions,
which links have been visited and which unvisited
(thereby setting the appropriate colour) ?

I always assumed this information was kept, in the
the case of Internet Explorer, in the location
"temporary Internet files" but after deleting
these the different colours still remain.
