My guess is that it's your firewall blocking the necessary in or out
data. I find Zone Alarm very quirky--often if I unload it (there doesn't
seem any way to disable it other than closing--a real pain) then I can get
through to sites which, when ZA is activated, are blocked, even though I
haven't knowingly set it that way. It seems, at least for me, to block
perfectly innocent sites for no apparent reason.
Others seem to have no problems, so perhaps it behaves differently on
different systems. It's either that, or I'm less intelligent than everyone
else!
I don't know if Sygate Personal Firewall has the same behaviour, but I am
told it's easier to configure the way you want.
