You certainly can not use my suggestion with a notebook (laptop) pc.
However, assuming the bad pc is a desktop, here is my fall back method
(always have a fallback :) )

Get a spare hard disk. Install it as the Master drive on the primary ide
channel in the bad pc. This means the non-working drive must be moved to
the other ribbon cable (secondary) or it must be jumpered as slave to the
'just installed' spare hard disk. Install ME on to the newly installed
disk, after partitioning it as one big drive and setting this drive to
'active'. Now all you need to do is copy your stuff to C: from D: and you
are backed up. If the spare drive must be returned, you simply reverse the
position of the c: drive with the d: drive, turn the pc on, and the bad
drive is now c: again. Reformat, reinstall ME, and copy your stuff back
over again.

One thing still holds true, check cmos and make sure any ide channel
(primary master or slave, secondary master or slave) you intend to use for a
hard disk is set to auto, and is not using size information entered by the
cmos hard disk detection wizard. That way, when you move drive positions
around, they will always be properly recognized.

You can try looking for a direct cable connection application that uses
either a printer cable or a serial cable. My reservation with this (aside
from the speed, I can open cases and put in disks faster than watching
gigabytes squeeze through a cable) is that all the ones I'm familiar with
have trouble with long file names, which is a fatal flaw to me. I do use Pc
Anywhere, but that's no help because it requires windows to be loaded, and
its cost is about the same as a new drive.

Subject: Re: [PCSOFT] Transfer of data via WinME's DOS

I failed to say that the computer I would use to transfer to, via a cable,
would have been a laptop with WinME. If this is not feasible, I will get
another computer and I will try the two replies I have so far recieved.

Take the cases off of two computers, set them close together back to
front, with the motherboards facing each other.

I can access the C:\ drive using a boot disk and would
like to transfer some of the data to another computer
before formatting or installing a new hard drive.
