Rick,
The first (and easiest) thing to try is to reset the display appearance to
the windows default.
RIGHT-click on the desktop and select PROPERTIES. Now click the
APPEARANCE tab. Use the drop-down selector in the SCHEME section and
select WINDOWS DEFAULT. Now click OK at the bottom.
But it sounds like you are missing some of the system fonts which is
causing windows to make "on the fly" substitutions -- which is also why
you can't find the substitution in the registry.
(At least it sounds good <g>)
The basic system fonts (and their filenames) are:
Modern (modern.fon)
MS Serif (serife.fon)
MS Dos CP (dosapp.001)
Symbol (symbole.fon)
System (vgasys.001)
Terminal (vgaoem.001)
Adding (or reinstalling) fonts is a quick and painless process. Just copy
them to a floppy from a working PC and then copy them (overwrite them)
into C:\windows\fonts on the sick PC and then reboot. If you have to work
with the fonts on the CD, then you will have to expand/extract them.
