Hi there
 
Bruce: yes it was a tax program (ATX) that  had the light print.  After I uninstalled all printers and reinstalled  it worked fine and matched the darkeness of all my other programs.
 
My big question though was why when I installed  the epson as a second printer, did it print to the brother (and with the correct coloring), and why nothing printed to the brother when I closed the epson and nothing printed to the brother when I turned it back on, and thwey brothjer compaltely stopped printing when I uninstalled the epson
