Joseph's suggestion should work.
In addition to the screensaver, I normally would disable most of the memory
resident programs in my task bar such as Anti-Virus program, Scheduler, *and
even Zone Alarm.* Still another fail-safe way of doing Defrag & ScanDisk is
doing it while running your system in Safe Mode. And since you have 2 hard
drives, I would recommend doing this maintenance in both drives while you're
at it.
