Although my friends think I am computer savvy, the truth is... with the way
this technology is currently going at warp speed, I can honestly say that my
knowledge about computers is mediocre or perhaps "I know enough to get
myself in trouble." To James... I have encountered similar problem you have
described here. It was a friend's computer. The problem, although they can
connect to their ISP, their browser- IE 4.X wuld not connect and give error
messages the same as what you described, ranging from "illegal operation",
"page faults", "invalid address", to IExplorer messages "terminating
operations" and others.

I tried Scandisk, Defrag, sfc, registry restore from backup, to
reinstallation of win98 (1st Ed). Nothing worked. His local programs
though, like MSOffice 97, Quicken, etc., all worked normally. It was just
his IE 4.x access to the Internet he was having problems with. At the end
of my wit, I went to Bob Wright's Free PC Tech's Basic Troubleshooting
archive hoping to get some ideas.

Anyway, here's what I found out. My friend had not used his computer
awhile. His system was plugged in to the wall outlet 24/7 WITHOUT any
protection. In other words, no surge protector. We recently had an
electrical storm that reached over his area. It was few days after that
storm when he started having problems with his computer. Now, realizing
this... it gave me a basis for a starting point. I fired up his system one
more time, explored his Internet Explorer directory and
clicked/right-clicked on his files. All IE mainfiles returned a "Corrupted
File" message. Re-installing IE did not help and worse, re-installing Win98
did not eliminate the problem either! I asked myself then, "What would an
unwelcomed, invading high voltage do to an idle computer innocently plugged
in directly to the wall outlet without surge protection?"

Bottom line, I had to come up with a consrvative decision. with my friend's
approval, I did fdisk and reformatted the damn thing and clean re-installed
everything. THAT solved the problem! Right now, my friend is happy as a
jay bird. His computer is back to normal one more time, connecting him to
the Internet. But I told him having exposed to an electrical storm, I would
not trust the physical integrity of his harddrive. I guess I was lucky to
do what I did but my haunch is that the invading voltage has affected that
part of the harddrive where IE resides, corrupting most (if not all) of the
IE files... *wild guess*! Well, it makes me sleep soundly at night thinking
I licked theproblem and found my answer (even though I am not 100% sure.)

Emie
