Joan,

Just a side note here. We are NOT a public list.
Both PCBUILD and PCSOFT are private mailing lists.
I think you may be confusing a mailing list with a newsgroup.

Newsgroups are open to the public, sort of like a bulletin board
in the hallway. Anybody walking by can read the messages
and see who sent them.

Mailing lists (like ours) are distributed as individual pieces
of email sent directly to the members. Notice that this
message as well as every message you recieve
from our mailing lists, does not have a loooooong string
of email addresses in the TO or FROM sections of the
heading. This is done deliberately to protect you.

Another way of looking at it, is that a newsgroup is
a central repository that anyone can access. Whereas
a mailing list is redistribution center that resends
a copy of the "posted" message but only to the members
of the list.

Your other comments about checkboxes on web sites
is right on the money. Beware of any site that has
"What are your interests?" checkboxes.
That's almost a 100% guarantee that you will end up
on a spam list.
