Here's a couple of bacon-saving tips:

Windows Update won't do it's thing?  There can be many different reasons for this problem but, if you find that the computer has logged onto the Windows Update site at what seems to be an amazing speed, but then found nothing to download, check that your computer's date is set correctly.  

Want to know how old is the webpage you're looking at?  In the address bar type this (and nothing more):
javascript:alert(document.lastModified)
then hit enter.  Up will pop a little box telling you when the page was last modified.
