The missing step: You have to select (highlight) the entire calendar dates.
Then gridlines will appear, and print.

I have MSWord 2000, this should probably work in the 2002 version. While in
your calendar, click on Format, Borders and Shading, click the Border tab,
and from there you can select which gridlines to apply to the calendar.
