I see that someone else has already responded to this post, but on my Word
97, it seems to be a different procedure than what the other poster
suggested, so I offer the following:

Open your "normal.dot" file, which is the default template for standard
blank documents. On my drive, the Templates folder is under C:\program
files\microsoft office\office\templates. Once it's open, go to the View
menu, and select "Header and Footer." Using the new toolbar that should now
appear, select "Insert Auto Text" then "Filename." "Normal.dot" will now
show up in the header, in grey: this will automatically change to reflect
whatever the name of the active document is, and should also show up when
printing.

To insert the file name in the footer, just scroll down the bottom of the
page while viewing with Header and Footer showing, click inside the footer,
and do the Insert thing again.

Save the changes to normal.dot; every new document will automatically have
the file name in the header or footer.
