How did you "...wipe the install..."?

When Office (and most other software) is uninstalled, many pieces of the old
installation are left behind.  Then when you try to REinstall, it does not
overwrite those left-overs files.  And in your case, some of those leftovers
are corrupted.

Uninstall the Office suite again, but this time, use the windows explorer to
delete ALL the directories/folders for office AFTER the uninstall finishes.

Microsoft's ADD/REMOVE programs does a very poor job of deleting software.
The InstallSheild's uninstaller is not much better.  For best results, use a
third party program like UNINSTALLER (my choice) or CLEAN SWEEP.
