I hadn't changed it, but re-setting USB to MSC fixed the problem.

I'd never have found that in 1000 years (I didn't even know there was a USB 
setting), and their handbook that came with the player was no help.

I wonder how many get chucked out because of poor manuals.

Now I have a happy little Sansa again.
