Yup, I have the Win98 Consumer Preview (Beta 3). The documentation that
comes with it says that Windows will not boot after December 31, 1998. I
will therefore need to upgrade to a full version of Win98.
Does anyone else agree that loading web pages seems to be much faster with
Win98? I seem to notice an incredible difference.
My thoughts on Win98 follow, ignore if you like, read if you like.
Just as Windows 3.0 was a huge leap from DOS, Windows95 was a huge leap from
Window 3.1x. Just as Windows 3.1x was a stabilizing step from Windows 3.0,
Windows 98 will be a stabilizing step from Windows 95. In other words,
Windows 98 is a way to get the bugs out of Windows 95, and introduce a
couple of new features.
I have personally found my Win98 installation (booting with NTWkstn and Red
Hat Linux) to be far more stable than my Win95 installation. They are
installed on separate hard drives, allowing me to switch back at any time.
Windows98 seems to be trying to take up the slack for less knowledable
computer users, by allowing them to schedule routine maintenance such as
defrag, scandisk, etc. You can use single-click interface, etc. but it is
not standard, nor necessary. Win98 hereby gets my vote.
