What is the O/S? If Win98, try Dr. Watson. Try turning off any virus
protection that's running at startup or in memory. I would not be surprised
to find that the problem is caused by one of these overblown, poorly
designed and mostly unnecessary programs.
Also, be suspicious of shareware/freeware/bets programs that may not be
fully debugged.
To pinpoint this thing, you'll have to get methodical:
Run Scandisk and defrag.
Take note of what apps were running when the problem occurs.
