I am transferring my VHS tapes to digital MPEG files using my Matrox G200
Marvel.

I have been encoding the files at MPEG-1. I chose this codec because of
it's universality. I reasoned that I would be able to play it back on any
computer in the future, quality is good, and that there was no point in
using MPEG-2 because it would never be any better then a VHS analog
recording, and the extra feature set 2 provides would not help me.

As far as compression goes, as long as I can get an hours worth of
recording on one CD,... I'm happy. In the future I can put all the hour
segments together on a single DVD..perhaps in another codec.

Is my reasoning sound? Have I chosen the right codec to archive my VHS
collection? If not, what should I use and why?

Thanks,

m
