Start windows in safe mode, then scandisk and defrag (in that order). With
everything loading up in the background when windows starts, there's too
much going on during those two operations to let it finish. You'll probably
hear to do a ctrl-alt-delete and end task of  everything but two items...
that takes up lots more time than just starting in safe mode and doing it.
