  That is, indeed, the Microsoft recommendation.  [I have no idea what their
reasoning is.]

  Actual requirement for swap space depends upon your application mix.  Any
rule of thumb that estimates swap file size based on physical RAM size is
makins some assumption that the size of installed physical RAM is already
tuned to your application needs -- and this is probably only very roughly
true.
