According to PCWeek Direct, MS is ready to release the Windows 98
"Refresh" and it will be called Windows 98 "Second Edition"

Follow the link below for details.

God I love marketing guys!

First we had BUG FIXES. But that sounded nasty so they changed the name
to PATCHES. But patch still sounded like it was broken and needed
fixing.... so enter the era of SERVICE RELEASEs.

And now we have REFRESHes and SECOND EDITIONs.....

A rose is still a rose by any other name and defective software is still
defective software no matter what name you put on the BUG FIX.

Yeah, I know... now all the programmers are going to tell me about how
complex "today's programs" are and how many lines of code there are.
Sorry guys, I just don't buy it. My washing machine is a fairly complex
device too, but it doesn't need an upgrade every six months. OOooh but
that's a specific purpose device -- it was designed to do one type of job.
Well, what is windows? The foundation upon which all other applications
operate. Sounds like a pretty specific purpose to me........

Hasn't anyone noticed the pattern that has been slowly emerging over the
last few years?
Sell a new release at the beginning of the year. Sit back and collect all
the consumer complaint data (beta test????). Then "Refresh" <giggle> it
six months later. Collect more complaints, and then sell a "new" and
"improved" version the following year. And I'm not just picking on MS.
Intuit has released a new version of it's products each year for the last
three years (QB5 in '97, QB6 in '98, and now QB99). So has First Aid and
many other products are starting to follow that same pattern.

But we, the buying public, have brought it on ourselves, because we
continue to buy these products even though we know they are defective.

Somehow, someway, we have lost sight of the fact that by NOT BUYING a
product, we can be heard much louder and faster than if we buy it and then
whine and complain about how poorly it performs.
