James,

There are two different types of confirmation messages.
A confirmation that a message has been delivered.
And a confirmation that a message has been read.

The "delivered" confirmation message is generated by the ISP's mail server.
This is what your Notes friend is referring to -- a delivered message, not
a read message.

The "read" confirmation message is sent by the mail client. Outlook has
the ability to control both of these confirmation types. OE can not control
either of them. OE does not generate "read" messages and it has no control
over the server.

You might want to have a conversation with the local postmaster and ask if
delivery receipts can be disabled. Perhaps you can send a command to turn
it off using the old PINE system. (PINE is one of the text based mail
program us old timers used back in the dark ages.)
