Thanks for all of the helpful hints and ideas re: above.  This morning I attempted for the 3rd or 4th time to reinstall EZ CD 5 Plat.  I noted on the Roxio website to do a custom install and NOT install Take Two which is incompatible with XP.  So, I patiently tried again going step by step (which I really think I did before).  Maybe third (or fourth) time was a charm because it worked!
