Nothing external hooked in. I have 2.23 GB free of 2.87 GB RAM. I really
jacked up the speed when I went back to Win Classic graphics instead of
AERO, so I'm happy. But the Ready Boost is making me crazier than normal.

Did you have another drive, maybe an external plugged into this laptop?
It sounds as though a regularly scheduled task is trying to run (Probably a
backup) and your flash drive has take the same drive letter.
How much RAM do you have? Ready Boost may not be much help to you.
