Ian,
 Create a new folder called Download 1 (or some such) on the desktop, put
downloads into it and it will become the default location for downloading.
I use the Windows default downloader.  I also have a Download 2 folder to
put the setup programs into after I install things. Keeps the confusion down
cuz I don't always get things installed immediately.
