A few game programs still, as an anti-piracy measure, require that
the player (each player, in a networked context) have their own copy
of the CD-ROM. Even though the software loads and runs from the hard
drive, it checks to find a copy of its CD in a/the [*] CD-ROM drive
before it will allow play to start.
(Circumventing this measure is probably *possible*, but as a
violation of the manufacturers license terms, is not acceptable for
discussion on this list.)
[*] I own a couple of multi-disk changers, and would love to be able
to keep all of the games I like to play loaded up at one time.
Unfortunately, in many cases the code only checks the *first* CD-ROM
drive letter found....
