Thanks for the input, but that is not correct.  That solution would lock
the entire document.  I only want to lock parts of the document.

I have received several suggestions, but most of the answers have missed
one or the other of the two key ingredients of this problem..... namely, I
am working with a TABLE in a TEMPLATE file.

But please keep the suggestions coming since I have not resolved this yet.
