  MFC42.dll is a system file; you should, I think, be able to
reinstall it from the Windows CD.

  The number after the colon is the "ordinal" ("index") number of the
particular thing, exported from the DLL, that is being linked to.
The link isn't really by name, but by ordinal number.  (MFC, version
4.2, exports thousands of things, and these applications probably
refer to several hundred of them -- the error message just reflects
the first one.)
