It sounds as though you may have inadvertently created a new toolbar.
Right-click the taskbar and look under "toolbars" for "Desktop" and remove
the check.

Somehow my taskbar now contains icons for all my desktop items, and they are
the same size as the icons already on my desktop area. This has resulted in
my taskbar now being and inch larger than normal. I have tried
right-clicking on each individual icon, hoping to be able to then click
"delete," but this does not work as "delete" is not an option. I can drag
the taskbar out of sight, but I am used to having it there to display my
open windows. How can I get the taskbar back to normal?
