Thanks Hugh it worked.  I did as you said and run it in safe mode.
FYI - I was told by the folks in tech services at work that I should run the 
uninstaller for each user I have.  I have two set up in XP Home so had to 
run it twice.  Ever since running it I haven't had any problems.
