Jane, you're not too specific about from where and to what you're trying to save.
However, the simple way to save certain parts of documents or web pages is to position your mouse pointer at the place you want to start, then hold down the left mouse button and 'drag' the pointer down the page. This will 'select' the bits you want to copy and they'll become 'highlighted'. Release the mouse button.
Now hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and tap the 'C' key. This will copy your selection to the invisible Windows 'clipboard'.
Open your new document and position the cursor where you want the copied text etc. to begin. Hold the Ctrl key again and click the 'V' key. This will 'paste' your selection into the document.
Another, more precise way of selecting text (providing the page allows it) is to click the mouse to 'place' the cursor at the top of the proposed selection, then, holding down the Shift key, use the arrow keys to select as much text as is required.
To select ALL the text in a document, use Ctrl\A.
